Designs A Personalized Treatment Plan
It is an outpatient treatment that uses magnetic stimulation to hone in on areas of the brain that cause symptoms of depression. During your treatments, you can anticipate a process similar to the one outlined below.
When you visit Bright Horizons Psychiatry for TMS, you sit in a comfortable treatment chair, and your provider fits the magnetic coil over your head. They adjust it to ensure it’s comfortable and is in precisely the right place.
Then they switch the device on, and you sit quietly for 20-30 minutes. TMS delivers focused magnetic stimulation directly to the target areas of the brain. You’ll hear a clicking sound and feel a tapping sensation on your head.
During that time, you can read, watch something on a mobile device, listen to music.
Afterward, Depending on your doctor’s recommendation, each treatment takes between 19 and 37 minutes. Initial TMS treatment involves having five sessions a week for six weeks, then a tapering protocol where you reduce the frequency to six sessions over three weeks. Results typically last 6-12 months and sometimes longer. If your symptoms return, you can safely receive further TMS treatments.
Because there are no effects on alertness or memory, you can drive yourself to and from treatment sessions.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation, often referred to as TMS is a noninvasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to improve symptoms of depression. TMS is typically used when antidepressant medications haven’t been effective, have ceased working, or as an alternative to medication.
TMS does not circulate in the blood throughout the body, so it does not have side effects like weight gain, sexual dysfunction, nausea, dry mouth, sedation, etc. The most common side effects reported during clinical trials were headache and scalp discomfort —generally mild to moderate—occurring less frequently after the first week of treatment.
It's typically recommended for individuals with treatment-resistant depression, specifically those who have not responded to traditional mental health treatment.
People will normally see results within the first two weeks. A typical initial course of treatment is about 15-30 minutes daily over 6-9 weeks.
When administered under professional supervision, TMS is considered safe and effective with little to no side effects
The duration of relief from depression symptoms varies. Some patients may experience benefits for weeks to months. Regular follow-up treatments may be necessary to maintain the effects.
